The very first photographic negative is of one of the oriel windows of Lacock Abbey, a charming Gothic house which was the home of William Henry Fox Talbot. His major contribution to the art of 'photogenic drawing' was to make more than one copy from his original image by using a second sheet of sensitized paper. His close friend Sir John Herschel, another pioneer in the field, proposed the name negative' for the prototype and positive' for the copy, and it is on this negative-positive technique that all modern photography depends. The announcement of this invention was made in 1839, and The National Trust Country House Album celebrates its 150th anniversary. The National Trust is the guardian of some of the finest country houses in Britain but it has never before produced a book which illustrates their history drawing solely from its extensive archive of early photographs. A wide selection of its properties are documented here through photographs taken from the family albums. Not only are these of great historical importance but above all they form a fascinating social document. A series of albums at Erddig chronicles the everyday life of the Yorke family and includes portraits of their servants. At Petworth a collection of specially commissioned photographs shows the children at their lessons in the nursery. At Plas Newydd we see the mad 'Dancing' Marquess of Anglesey resplendent in a series of increasingly dazzling costumes. By showing pictures of these great houses as they were in their heyday, of the families who lived there, of their friends and their servants, The National Trust Country House Album recreates them as homes, bringing them once again to life.
