First Edition
Hardcover. 1st edition. Small 8vo. original green publisher's cloth with gilt lettered spine. xii, 110, [2 ads.] pages. Includes frontis & 1 plate. A contemporary response to the theories of Lowell on the likelihood of life on Mars and theories about supposed canals on its surface. Written in refutation to Percival Lowell's "Mars and Its Canals" (1906), this work argues that life, as we know it, cannot exist elsewhere in the universe. Wallace (1823-1913) was a contemporary of Charles Darwin who independently came up with the idea of 'Natural Selection.' Charles H. Smith wrote about this work, "For many years one of Wallace's least remembered books, Is Mars Habitable? is increasingly being recognized as one of the first examples of the proper application of the scientific method to the study of extraterrestrial atmospheres and geography--that is, as one of the pioneer works in the field of exobiology." Offset darkening to blank front endpaper (from a laid in paper), otherwise gorgeous with very litle wear, just the faintest shelf wear at the corners. A beautiful copy of this important work, Very Good+ Condition. (MX-38-3).

First Edition
Hardcover. First Edition. Includes photograph of Lowell's map of Mars. Wallace, who developed an theory of natural selection independently of Darwin, disagreed scientifically with Lowell that the canals he saw indicated life on Mars. Considered a fine example of extra-terrestrial biology. Neatly rebound in the original covers which have moderate wear and some light and dark staining to the rear board. Firmly bound, internally clean, very good indeed.

Full Description: WALLACE, Alfred Russel. Is Mars Habitable? A Critical Examination of Professor Percival Lowell's Book "Mars and its Canals," With An Alternative Explanation, London: Macmillan and Co., Limited, 1907. First Edition. Octavo (7 3/4 x 5 1/4 inches; 196 x 133 mm). xii, 110, [2, publisher's advertisements] pp. With two engraved plates, including frontispiece. Half-title. Publisher's full green cloth. Front board ruled in gilt and blind. With gilt round central device, including the title and the author's monogram. Back board ruled in blind. Spine ruled and lettered in gilt. Cream coated endpapers. Some very minor rubbing to spine extremities, and a nearly invisible puckering to the cloth on front board. Otherwise near fine. "In 1900 [Wallace] brought out the two-volume collection of his essays Studies Scientific and Social, and three years later the study Man's Place in the Universe, in which he created a stir by arguing for the soleness of advanced life on earth and its centrality of location in the universe (then thought to extend no further than our own galaxy). Some of the arguments used in the latter work were applied in 1907 to the more special case of Mars in an attempt (Is Mars Habitable?) to debunk Percival Lowell's theory that the red planet was inhabited. In these two works Wallace fully anticipated the anthropic principle and all but founded another study for which he has been given but little credit: exobiology." (Oxford DNB). HBS 68948. $1,250.
