Skvorecky was born in Czechoslovakia but lived much of his life in Canada. He supported Czech dissident writers while writing on the horrors of totalitarianism. He was also an expert on jazz and the Cthuhlu mythos. The Cowards was originally published in the original Czech in 1958. Boards are lightly worn along edges with some general rubbing. Spine a bit sunned. Boards show just a touch of shelfwear. Binding is sound and pages are clean and unmarked.

Although written in 1948 it was not published until 1958 and immediately banned by the Czech government at the time.

Canadian Czech scholar & political scientist, Harold Gordon Skilling (who with his wife the sociologist Sally Bright, became close friends of the author in Toronto) was ultimately decorated in 1992 by President Vaclav Havel with the highest Czech honour, the Order of the White Lion. A nice copy with offset patch on ffe from laid-in clipping (absent); in a bright intact jacket worn very lightly only at crown of joints. Exceptional thus. Inscribed by Author(s).
