Book
Paperback. Condition: Very Good. In 1769 two ships set out independently in search of a missing continent: a French merchant ship, the St. Jean-Baptiste, commanded by Jean de Surville, and a small British naval vessel, the Endeavour, commanded by Captain James Cook. That Christmas, in New Zealand waters, the two captains were almost within sight of each other, though neither knew of the other's existence. This is the stirring tale of these rival ships and the men who sailed in them. Cook's first long voyage was one of the most remarkable in recorded history. He not only sailed around the world, following the most difficult route any navigator had ever attempted; he also changed the maps of the world. In heavy seas he made a more thorough search for the missing continent-believed to lie somewhere between New Zealand and South America-than had ever been made. He was the first to explore most of the New Zealand coast and a vast stretch of the east coast of Australia, and the first to explore the longest reef in the world, the Great Barrier Reef. In Jakarta and Cape Town, and in the seas between them, Cook lost a third of his crew to tropical illnesses, after earlier saving them from scurvy. The ship in which he circled the world was not much larger in area than a tennis court. Along with the de Surville vessel, the sea was an arena of international rivalry, for during his voyage Cook encountered Dutch, Spanish, French, and Portuguese competitors and suspicions. Geoffrey Blainey brings his marvelous storytelling powers to bear on this fascinating and important adventure, drawing us brilliantly into the lives of the major figures. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. 1st. xii, 369 pages, illustrations; 24 cm. Firm binding, clean inside copy. Age toning. Stated First American Edition. Dust jacket lightly soiled, with a creased back flap. "'She was,' George Bernard Shaw wrote, 'a great citizen, a great civilizer, and a great investigator.' For many she represented the triumph of the independent Englishwoman, for others little more than a heroic failure. But whatever responses Beatrice Webb provoked in her unusual life, she could scarcely be ignored. In this fine and sensitive new biography, Carole Seymour-Jones uncovers the brilliant and beautiful woman who renounced social position to fight for workers and slum dwellers in late-nineteenth-century London; who chose socialism over love and motherhood when she married Sidney Webb; who with Shaw was a founder of Fabian social reform; and who with her husband applauded Soviet communism in its early years. 'Beatrice's story is a very modern one,' the author writes, because 'it is a story of choices. She reworked the Victorian feminine ideal of the "angel in the house" to follow her own original path as a social investigator [and] she paid a heavy price.' Ms. Seymour-Jones has written an intriguing biography with important reverberations for women in our own time. / Carole Seymour-Jones studied history at Oxford and was first drawn to Beatrice Webb through her diaries and letters, many of which appear for the first time in this book. Ms. Seymour-Jones lives and writes in England." - Publisher. Size: 8vo.

Paperback. Condition: Fine. xiv, 412 pages, illustrations; 23 cm. Tight, clean copy. "In The Cultural Achievement, Mr. Rowse chronicles the astonishingly rich cultural flowering that marked the reign of Elizabeth I. He brings vividly to life the age's poetry, painting, sculpture, minor arts, and, above all, the tightly knit world of the theatre, in which a community of playwrights and actors worked with and sometimes against each other. He devotes individual chapters to the masters of Elizabethan music: Byrd, Dowland, Weelkes, Gibbons, and their followers, and to the science of the English Renaissance, with discussions of Gilbert's great work on magnetism and Harvey's discovery of the circulation of the blood." - Publisher.
