Hardcover. Condition: VG+. Dust Jacket Condition: VG+. Photos, (illustrator). 1st. 1st. 24cm By 16cm. Following the massacre at Wounded Knee in December 1890 a baby girl, one of the few survivors, was adopted by a US general and his wife and while she was well treated as a child Lost Bird's later life became a tragic one. Her adoptive mother, a newspaper editor and suffragette also championed the cause of America's native people. Lost Bird, however, died in 1920, aged 29 and it was not until 1991 that her body was returned to the cemetery at Wounded Knee. Many aspects of life in the US in the late 1800s/early 1900s are explored in this interesting lookat two cultures, the rich and influential and the poor and dispossed. There is much in this book that is unsettling and sad, but it is also an honest history that should not be overlooked. 384 pages including notes, bibliography, index., 17 b/w photos. Yellow board hard covers with black fabric spine strip with gilt titles VG+, tiny book plate lower right front pastedown, ink blob lower page edges near spine, text block excellent, ditto pictorial DJ.
