Nobel prizewinner Pasternak was unable to collect his prize due to exile under the Stalinist regime; these poems, written in the eponymous voice, first appeared in the framework of the novel Dr Zhivago, whose first publication in 1957 marked the end of 25 years of literary exile for Pasternak.
