Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. ILLUSTRATED (illustrator). VERY NICE DARK BLUE COVER, GOLD DESIGN AND PRINT SPINE. FRONTISPIECE A PICTURE OF A BUST OF HANNIBAL. FORMER OWNERS LABEL IN FRONT. TIGHT AND CLEAN THROUGHOUT. FOR THE LOVER OF HISTORY AND ROME. 10 CHAPTERS WITH GREAT DETAIL TIME PERIODS. Hannibal (247 ? between 183 and 181 BC) was a Carthaginian general and statesman who commanded the forces of Carthage in their battle against the Roman Republic during the Second Punic War. Hannibal's father, Hamilcar Barca, was a leading Carthaginian general during the First Punic War. His younger brothers were Mago and Hasdrubal; his brother-in-law was Hasdrubal the Fair, who commanded other Carthaginian armies. Hannibal lived during a period of great tension in the Mediterranean Basin, triggered by the emergence of the Roman Republic as a great power with its defeat of Carthage in the First Punic War. Revanchism prevailed in Carthage, symbolized by the pledge that Hannibal made to his father to "never be a friend of Rome". Hannibal was one of the sons of Hamilcar Barca, a Carthaginian leader, and an unknown mother. He was born in what is present-day northern Tunisia, one of many Mediterranean regions colonised by the Canaanites from their homelands in Phoenicia, a region corresponding with the Mediterranean coasts of modern Lebanon and Syria. He had several sisters whose names are unknown, and two brothers, Hasdrubal and Mago. His brothers-in-law were Hasdrubal the Fair and the Numidian king Naravas. He was still a child when his sisters married, and his brothers-in-law were close associates during his father's struggles in the Mercenary War and the Punic conquest of the Iberian Peninsula. Following the American Revolutionary War and prior to becoming president in 1801, Jefferson was the nation's first U.S. secretary of state under George Washington and then the nation's second vice president under John Adams. During the American Revolution, Jefferson represented Virginia at the Second Continental Congress and served as the second governor of Virginia from 1779 to 1781. In 1785, Congress appointed Jefferson U.S. minister to France, where he served from 1785 to 1789. ANTIQUE BOOKS DEN, WHERE HISTORY LIVES.

TIGHT AND CLEAN THROUGHOUT. FOR THE LOVER OF HISTORY AND UNITED STATES. 11 CHAPTERS WITH GREAT DETAIL. Patrick Henry (May 29, 1736 ? June 6, 1799) was an American politician, planter and orator who declared to the Second Virginia Convention (1775): "Give me liberty, or give me death!" A Founding Father, he served as the first and sixth post-colonial Governor of Virginia, from 1776 to 1779 and from 1784 to 1786. A native of Hanover County, Virginia, Henry was primarily educated at home. After an unsuccessful venture running a store, as well as assisting his father-in-law at Hanover Tavern, he became a lawyer through self-study. Beginning his practice in 1760, Henry soon became prominent through his victory in the Parson's Cause against the Anglican clergy. He was elected to the Virginia House of Burgesses, where he quickly became notable for his inflammatory rhetoric against the Stamp Act of 1765. ANTIQUE BOOKS DEN, WHERE HISTORY LIVES.

TIGHT AND CLEAN THROUGHOUT. FOR THE LOVER OF HISTORY, CATHOLIC HISTORY AND CARDINAL RICHELIEU. 10 CHAPTERS WITH GREAT DETAIL. Armand Jean du Plessis, 1st Duke of Richelieu 9 September 1585 ? 4 December 1642), known as Cardinal Richelieu, was a French statesman and prelate of the Catholic Church. He became known as l'Éminence rouge, or "the Red Eminence", a term derived from the title "Eminence" applied to cardinals and from the red robes that they customarily wear. Consecrated a bishop in 1607, Richelieu was appointed Foreign Secretary in 1616. He continued to rise through the hierarchy of both the Catholic Church and the French government, becoming a cardinal in 1622 and chief minister to King Louis XIII of France in 1624. He retained that office until his death in 1642, when he was succeeded by Cardinal Mazarin, whose career he had fostered. Richelieu became engaged in a bitter dispute with Marie de Médici, the king's mother, and formerly his close ally. ANTIQUE BOOKS DEN, WHERE HISTORY LIVES.

TIGHT AND CLEAN THROUGHOUT. FOR THE LOVER OF HISTORY, CATHOLIC HISTORY AND CARDINAL WOLSEY. 11 CHAPTERS WITH GREAT DETAIL. Thomas Wolsey (c. March 1473 ? 29 November 1530) was an English statesman and Catholic cardinal. When Henry VIII became King of England in 1509, Wolsey became the king's almoner. Wolsey's affairs prospered and by 1514 he had become the controlling figure in virtually all matters of state. He also held important ecclesiastical appointments. These included the Archbishop of York?the second most important role in the English church?and that of papal legate. His appointment as a cardinal by Pope Leo X in 1515 gave him precedence over all other English clergy. The highest political position Wolsey attained was Lord Chancellor, the king's chief adviser (formally, as his successor and disciple Thomas Cromwell was not). In that position, he enjoyed great freedom and was often depicted as the alter rex ("other king"). ANTIQUE BOOKS DEN, WHERE HISTORY LIVES.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. ILLUSTRATED (illustrator). VERY NICE DARK BLUE COVER, GOLD DESIGN AND PRINT SPINE. FRONTISPIECE A PICTURE OF GENERAL GARIBALDI. FORMER OWNERS LABEL IN FRONT. TIGHT AND CLEAN THROUGHOUT. FOR THE LOVER OF HISTORY, GENERAL GARIBALDI. 52 CHAPTERS WITH GREAT DETAIL. Garibaldi was born in Melbourne, Australia, the son of Ricciotti Garibaldi and Harriet Constance Hopcraft. Together with his father, he took part in the Greco-Turkish War of 1897 alongside the Greeks and afterwards fought with the liberals against Cipriano Castro in Venezuela, and in other conflicts in South America. He volunteered and served with great distinction in the British Army during the Second Boer War, carrying with him a sword given to his grandfather by the working men of Tyneside, England, in 1854. He served as a lieutenant colonel (teniente coronel) in the army of Francisco I. Madero during the initial victories of the 1910 Mexican Revolution. Plaza Garibaldi in Mexico City was named in honor of his actions in the battle of Nuevo Casas Grandes. Pancho Villa sacked Lt Col Garibaldi because of a bitter controversy over the credit for the victory at First Battle of Ciudad Juárez in 1911, but the name of the plaza (formerly Pila de la Habana) stuck nonetheless, despite the way he left the Army of the Revolution. Garibaldi again served with the Greek Army during the First Balkan War in 1912. ANTIQUE BOOKS DEN, WHERE HISTORY LIVES.
