Book First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Henry Y. Sugimoto (illustrator). 1st Edition. Lovely little book of Japanese poetry. Introduction by Ralph W. Sockman of the Christ Methodist Church in New York. Translated by Lois J. Erickson, although instead of a "translation", the work is described as an "interpretation". The volume is divided into three sections, each with a foreword by the translator (sorry, "interpreter"). Part one is the poetry of the prolific Japanese Christian pacifist and activist, Toyohiko Kagawa. Part two is Christian poems from other Japanese poets. Part three is selected classical poems, mostly haiku and short verses. The whole thing is enhanced with delightful little soft drawings. Quarter cloth has slight wear to spine ends; paper sides are a little darkened and marked with slight wear to corners. There's a name and address in ink, and a bookseller's label to front endpapers, but a very good copy lacking the original glassine dust jacket. JS.
