Book
Hardcover. Condition: New. Original bdg. HC. Roy. 8vo. (24 x 17 cm). In Persian. [14], 184 p. Guzide-e asrâr-nâmâ. Attar was a twelfth-century Persian poet, theoretician of Sufism, and hagiographer from Nishapur who had an immense and lasting influence on Persian poetry and Sufism. Man?iq-u?-?ayr [The Conference of the Birds] and Il?h?-N?ma [The Book of Divine] are among his most famous works. "Asrar-nama" is the earliest of Attar's mystical narrative poems ; it has attracted less scholarly attention than the other three. This may be partly due to its lack of a frame-story. The contents are arranged in 22 discourses (maq?las) in random order, without regard to sequence of ideas. Each maq?la begins with an outline of an idea, which is then developed by means of short anecdotes. Frequently the anecdotes are accompanied by reflections which lead into thematically related fields or, in some cases, stray quite far from the basic idea. The work thus lacks a definite conceptual structure. Its concluding message is the hope of release of man's spiritual substance from the world's grasp. In no other work does ?A???r propound the gnostic concept of the soul's fall and the duty to free it from worldly and material bonds so comprehensively and forcefully as in the Asr?r-n?ma. The resultant belief that this work influenced the preamble of the Ma?naw?-e ma'naw?, probably gave rise to the legend that the aged ?A???r donated it to the young Jal?l-al-d?n R?m? as his testament. The concluding message naturally leads the author into moralizing reflections of the world's transience, vanity, and depravity, which fill whole chapters in the last third of the work (chap. 14 onward). After the three introductory chapters on taw??d, na't, and man?qeb, the fundamentals of the gnostic concept are expounded; certain aspects are elaborated in chapters 8 and 11, and in chapter 5 the favorite theme of reason and love (aql o e?q) is introduced. Chapter 12 also seems worthy of special mention, because it is about the impenetrability of celestial and extramundane secrets (asr?r) and is thus more pertinent to the book's title than the rest. Book First Edition
Leather. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. Original decorative dark brown full leather bdg. 44 p. Printed on a special paper with an early 18th century watermark. The Advice by Attâr includes 901 couplet in Persian. Attar Persian poet, Sufi, theoretician of mysticism, and hagiographer, born ca. 540/1145-46 at N???p?r, and died there in 618/1221. His name was Abû ?âmed Mo?ammad b. Abî Bakr Ebrâhîm or, according to Ebn al-Fowatî, b. Sa'd b. Yûsof. ?Attâr and Farîd-al-dîn were his pen-names. It seems that 'Attâr was not well known as a poet in his own lifetime, except at N?sâpûr. 'Awfî, who traveled widely, may have heard about him while staying there , or perhaps from Majd-al-dîn Bagdâdî if this Majd-al-dîn was their common Sufi mentor, though Awfî appears to have only known about Attâr's lyric poetry. Farid al-din 'Attar is one of the most famous spiritual poets of Persia. His works were the inspiration of Rumi and many other mystical poets. 'Attar, along with Sana'i were two of the greatest influences on Rumi in his Sufi views. Rumi has mentioned both of them with the highest esteem several times in his poetry. Rumi praises 'Attar as follows: "Attar roamed the seven cities of love. we are still just in one alley." 'Attar reached an age of well over 80 and died a violent death in the massacre which the Mongols inflicted on Nishapour in April 1221. The world depicted in 'Attar's works reflects the whole evolution of the Sufi movement. The starting point is the idea that the body-bound soul's awaited release and return to its source in the other world can be experienced during the present life in mystic union attainable through inward purification. In explaining his thoughts, 'Attar uses material not only from specifically Sufi sources but also from older ascetic legacies. Apart from his two famous epic masnavi poems 'The Conference of the Birds' and 'The Book of God' he composed a Divan full of powerful, enlightened ghazals and ruba'is. The Pand-nama is a small book of wise, moral advice in short poems in rhyming couplets that is practical and spiritual. (Encyclopedia Iranica & Pand-nama : (Book of Wisdom) Selections Introduction).
