Book First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. Jacket and illustrations by Harry Grimley (illustrator). 1st Edition. First collected edition, first impression. Ex library but with fairly discreet stamps and labels. Some edge wear to top and bottom of jacket and spine, spine faded, corners slightly rubbed and bruised, some lean, some slight yellowing to page block, some creasing to inside flaps, not price clipped (£16.99), no personal inscriptions, internally clean and tight, overall a quite a reasonable copy for its age and ex library. 438pp, illustrated endpapers. This 'Miss Read' omnibus contains two books which are not strictly part of the Fairacre series, although the town of Caxley does feature in the books. The idea of writing a book about Caxley came to Miss Read one day when she was standing at an upstairs window overlooking the market place of her own local town, Newbury. 'What a setting for a novel. I could have two tradesmen who live over shops, one prosperous and one struggling, whose circumstances become reversed during the course of the story. THE MARKET SQUARE and THE HOWARDS OF CAXLEY chart the story of two families, the Norths and the Howards, from the time of Edward VII to the 1950s, and are as full of charm as her Thrush Green and Fairacre series. Dora Saint's (1913-2012), novels are wry regional social comedies, laced with gentle humour and subtle social commentary. Saint was also a keen observer of nature and the changing seasons. Quite a scarce book.
