The Ponce Museum of Art is a Puerto Rican institution whose main focus is European art. Over the years, it has brought together a Spanish collection that is as eclectic as it is interesting, representative of an impressive range of periods, genres, techniques, formats and schools throughout more than four centuries of Spanish painting and sculpture. With nearly five thousand objects made using different techniques --ranging from ancient Buddhist China to contemporary Latin America, passing through Victorian England and 17th century Europe--, the Ponce Museum of Art is the largest institution of its kind. type in the Caribbean and occupies a privileged place among the museums of the American continent as a whole. The nature and quality of its collection can be surprising, and a series of historical factors come into play when it comes to understanding the happy anomaly of its location in a country that had not been known for its collections of ancient painting.
