Sri Lanka (previously known as Ceylon) is a small island nation in the indian Ocean. Due to the poor economic conditions, many Sri Lankans are forced to search for employment outside their own country. Many young women find housekeeping jobs in the Arabian Gulf and Lebanon. There are several thousand Sri Lankan housemaids in Lebanon. Many of these women have left their husbands and children in order to earn an income that can guarantee their families a better living. Many are young women whose dream is to collect enough money for a dowry, so that they can get married. Unfortunately, in many of the countries where these young women find employment, they face racism, prejudice and oppression. Many work long hours and have few if any rights. Many are abused and many others work in near anonymity, caring for children who might not even know their name but call them "the Siri-Lankiye". Many are exploited also by their employment agents.
