About the Author:
Elizabeth Ridley was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin in 1966. She has an MA in creative writing from the University of East Anglia and on graduating she published her British debut novel THE REMARKABLE JOURNEY OF MISS TRANBY QUIRKE in 1996.
Review:
This novel possesses the power to make us think about an entire generation of women in a way we never have done before. INDEPENDENT ON SUNDAY Humour, historical flavour, political astuteness and a style which affords the reader a pleasure akin to that of watching a bird in flight... writing like this cannot be taught. THE TIMES This is a remarkable and entertaining book: the writer creates a convincing picture of London at the turn of the century, reflecting society as it was and conveying that sense of expectation that the position of women was about to change forever. GAY SCOTLAND Compelling and beautifully written... the emotional power of the forbidden affair [will] keep you rapt until the end. THE TIMES

Book Description Illustrierte Originalbroschur. Condition: Wie neu. Englische Erstausgabe. First Imprint. 183 pages. Paperback. 21,5 cm. Very Good. Sehr guter Zustand. Aus der Bibliothek der Gräfin Ledebur. When love enters Tranby Quirke's life in the form of a beautiful 19-year-old student, Lysette McDonald, she embarks on the most remarkable journey of all. London: 1909. Thirty-four-year-old spinster and secret suffragette Tranby Quirke spends her days toiling in obscurity as a lecturer to modern women and spends her nights embarking on exotic foreign adventuresbut only inside her head. Then love enters Tranby's life in the most unexpected of ways and her real life adventures take her on a journey beyond imagining. - Elizabeth Ridley was born and raised in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, where she fell in love with books at the age of six. She has a bachelor's degree in journalism from Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois, and a master's degree in creative writing from The University of East Anglia in Norwich, England, where she studied under now-Poet Laureate Andrew Motion. In 1994 she received a Hawthornden Fellowship to Hawthornden Castle in Lasswade, Scotland. Before turning to writing full-time Liz's many unorthodox jobs included stints as a meat slicer in Milwaukee, a nanny in London, a cherry harvester in Norway, and a houseparent for handicapped teens in rural Wales. Since 2001, she has owned and operated "The Writer's Midwife," a home-based freelance critiquing, editing, and publishing consultation business. Sprache: Englisch Gewicht in Gramm: 250.
