Another stunning literary novel from the author of highly acclaimed The Pink Hotel—longlisted for the Orange Prize, a New York Times Book Review Editors' Choice, and an O Magazine Debut Novel to Pick Up Now   "Eva had always considered leaving to be the most pleasurable moment of any relationship. You know where you are with goodbye: you know that mistakes dissolve, doors open, and soon everything will be possible again."

Leaving has always come naturally to Eva Elliott. The daughter of a pilot, she spent her childhood leaving schools and cities. Now an adult, she enjoys the thrill of saying goodbye much more than the butterflies of a first smile or kiss. There's so much more potential in walking away, and Eva has always had a dangerously vivid imagination. During a rainy summer in Soho, when she becomes fascinated by a golden eagle that has escaped London Zoo to prowl the city, and a beguiling stranger begins appearing around town armed with a conspiratorial smile and a secret, Eva discovers that endings just aren't as easy as they used to be. Is it a flirtation playing out among the crumbling offices, clubs, and alleys of Soho, or something much darker? The line blurs in this haunting story about saying goodbye.

About the Author:
Anna Stothard is the author of The Pink Hotel, which was widely acclaimed, longlisted for the Orange Prize 2012, and is slated to be the basis of a film directed by Anna Paquin. She is a freelance journalist who writes travel articles for the Observer and the Guardian as well as other features for magazines and newspapers.
From Booklist:
Eva has always enjoyed leaving relationships more than being in them. Now in her longest relationship ever at three years and counting, she finds herself imagining just how she will make her exit this time. The problem is, she can’t quite imagine leaving Luke. The tables are turned when she meets a mysterious and enchanting young woman who insinuates herself into every corner of Eva’s life. Grace shows up at Eva’s work events, at her office, even at her apartment. As Eva tries to work out just how Grace fits into her relationship with Luke, she becomes unsure of whom to trust. With her suspicion growing, Eva turns increasingly introspective, taking refuge in outlandish daydreams. She continues to contemplate whether and how she might leave Luke, only now she also wonders if she might get left behind first, and if that’s what she really wants. This soul-searching tale inclines toward the gloomy, and Eva’s self-defeating tendencies will wear thin on some readers, but Stothard’s (The Pink Hotel, 2011) pleasantly lilting prose ultimately makes her second novel an intriguing read. --Cortney Ophoff
