Now in the book form, the story is only part of many tales. The female character of one story is only one among many other characters in widely varying settings. The narrator however emerges as one voice bringing him into sharper focus for the reader in a land that is divided north-south geographically the north tied to the vaster sub-continent and the southern perimeter presenting a view of the ocean untied to any land mass unobstructed until the south pole itself. That the divisions that have been bred in the cultural and social landscape of its people by this geographical disparity in this tiny island over centuries and are still unbridgeable in a global era of telecommunication and rapid transport is the canvas for this touch-and go brush strokes and collage of a novel.

About the Author:
ROMESH GUNESEKERA grew up in Sri Lanka and now lives in London. His debut novel Reef was shortlisted for the Booker Prize and the Guardian Fiction Prize in 1994 and won the Yorkshire Post First Work Prize. In 1997 he was awarded the prestigious Premio Mondello award in Italy. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature in 2004. He is the author of numerous novels and short story collections, including Reef, Monkfish Moon and The Sandglass, all of which are published by Granta Books.
