The Lucinda “Lucy” Richards trilogy, spanning the years from 1911 to the 1930s, has everything good books should have: a variety of landscapes, characters of all ages and social classes, an overall tenderness that never lapses into sentimentality, and a sense of the comic amidst the tragic. Lucy is feisty, funny, and completely open-armed about life. Josh passionately confronts danger and greed and prejudice with courage and humor and, sometimes, with bare fists. Even the minor characters are so rife with color that you first turn the pages quickly to see what they will do next and, then, you turn them slowly so as to savor each page of this remarkable trilogy.

The year is 1931 and Lucy Richards Arnold—now a mother of a precocious four-year-old son—is in rural West Texas, teaching in the school where her husband, Josh, is principal and struggling to make a success of their farm during the bleak, hard times of the Great Depression. Out of this barren landscape, rich and colorful characters emerge as if from a fertile land. Before the year’s end, Lucy is faced with a loss of such magnitude that she must struggle to find a way to recapture the joy in her very existence.

From the Publisher:
Evoking the same small-town charm as Leaving Cold Sassy and Fried Green Tomatoes, this poignant conclusion to the Lucy Richards trilogy that began with The Train To Estelline and continued in A Place Called Sweet Shrub draws the reader into a Depression-era world of marriage, motherhood, teaching, and life in rural West Texas. Written with the same heartwarming by never sentimental storytelling ability that captivated readers of the best-selling first two books in the Lucy Richards trilogy, The Train To Estelline and A Place Called Sweet Shrub, Jane Roberts Wood once again creates a tale that calls to mind all the secret pleasures and pain of small town American life. The year is 1931 and Lucy Richards Arnold has moved back to a neglected farm in West Texas with her husband Josh and precocious four-year-old son. Life is difficult, what with drought, the Depression, and trying to run a school in a community with little regard for formal education. But all else pales in comparison when a terrible tragedy forces Lucy and Josh to try to find a way to recapture the joy in their marriage and their very existence. Against a bleak and barren landscape, Jane Roberts Wood's rich and colorful characters come to life, capturing the hearts of readers already familiar with Lucy's saga, and those who are discovering the magic for the first time with this novel.

"Wood has a rare gift for transcending the ordinary...this is a touching, often humorous novel and a vivid portrait of the scorching solitude of West Texas."--Publishers Weekly
