Beginning with “Life is loneliness. Or it is not loneliness,” Twofold Song talks about love and desire to show us that our lives and the world we live in are composed of twofolds. Our lives are twofold in that they can be both lonely and not lonely. The world is twofold in that it consists of men and women. When a man meets a woman and together they create a fold, it is called love. About the Author:
Yi Mun-yol was born in Seoul, Korea in 1948. He entered the College of Education at Seoul National University in 1968 and majored in Korean Language Education. In 1970, he left the university and studied for the civil service examination until he joined the mandatory Korean army service in 1973. He received Donga Ilbo’s Sinchun Literature Award in 1979 for Saehagok (Song on the Border) and became a part of the Korean literary world. In that same year, he received the Writers Today Award for Saram-ui adeul (Son of Man). Since then, he has received numerous literary awards for his works. French translations of Geumsijo (the Bird with Golden Wings), Geu hae gyeo-ul (Winter That Year), Saehagok, and Urideurui ilgeureojin yeong-ung (Our Twisted Hero) were published in France in 1990, 1991, and 1992 respectively. The Japanese translation of Geumsijo was also published in Japan in 1992.
