Busy People - Softcover

PreSchool-Grade 1-- Fourteen workers are featured here. Each double-page spread shows a person opposite his or her tools or means of livelihood. Children are asked a simple question that encourages them to describe what objects the person uses, creating an opportunity for one-on-one or group sharing. The full-color watercolor pictures depict plump, rosy-cheeked, multiethnic characters (nine men and five women) in their work clothes, holding tools of their trade. Each illustration is set against an expanse of white and boxed with a thin colored line that clearly focuses attention on the worker. The men hold traditional male jobs (mechanic, fisherman, repairman), while the women are shown as doctor and farmer as well as baker and gardener. Margaret Miller's photographic guessing-game books-- Whose Hat? (1988), Whose Shoe? (1991) and Who Uses This? (1990, all Greenwillow)--are aimed at the same age group and feature less rigid gender roles.
