When Columbus arrived in the Americas with six Jews on board his ship, who would have dreamed that the Jewish population in America would go on to become one of such size and influence in the centuries to come. In "Coming to America: Jewish Americans, Robert Stein tells the heart-rending story of the three waves of Jewish persecution and immigration from different parts of the world (South America, Germany, and Eastern Europe and Russia); by 1911, one quarter of Manhattan's residents were Jewish. They brought with them their vibrant Yiddish culture and distinctive food, their strong work ethic and yearning for education, and a determination to pull together in the face of anti-Semitism; and drawing on a rich artistic heritage, they gave us talents ranging from Arthur Miller and Irving Berlin to Woody Allen and Steven Spielberg.

[flap copy]
For the world's oppressed, poor, or simply opportunistic, America has always offered hope, luck, and the chance for a new start. "Coming to America is a nostalgic and evocative series using the authentic voices and personal accounts of the people who undertook--willingly or unwillingly--the often-dangerous voyage to the new country. Authored by specialists in their subjects under the general editorship of Barry Moreno, a curator at Ellis Island Museum, the books contain dozens of voices that speak clearly down the generations. They relate the engrossing stories of their personal histories, their journeys, how they were received, and what they made of their new lives in America.
Robert Stein is a historian and a StaffDeveloper at the Research Foundation at the State University of New York. Following his thesis on American immigration and migrant mobility, displayed at Ellis Island, he now teaches American history, specializing in the history of welfare reform in the United States.
Barry Moreno is a historian at the Ellis Island Museum. He has worked on a book of interviews of the immigrants passing through Ellis Island in different decades, and was the author of the Statue of Liberty Encyclopedia.
