The need of a check list of the books in the Newberry Library which were printed before 31 December 1500, Incunabula), has been keenly felt for a number of years, but pressure of work in other directions has hitherto prevented its compilation. With the inauguration of the John M. Wing Foundation the necessity of such a list has become impera tive, as the works to be acquired with the income of that Foundation will perforce include a very considerable number of Incunabula. With such a list in hand the processes in volved in selecting and buying further examples will be greatly expedited, the danger of duplication will be less ened, and the administrative use and public exhibition of all our Incunabula markedly simplified.

It should be clearly understood that the present check list merely records the results of a preliminary examination of the books described. They have not been given full colla tion nor has their bibliographical and literary history been fully investigated; in many cases the identification given is only tentative and approximate. The list is not intended as a bibliographical contribution, but simply as a practical working hand list for official use by the Library Staff.
