From the Author:
Can't tell you how much I enjoyed writing this! In many ways, it was cathartic; I explored the many tense and pressure-packed moments in my career--moments where I was absolutely exhausted and on the verge of quitting--and thought about what I might say to halt his eventual breakdown. Because truly, I had a breakdown.
It's been about 18 months since then. I've calmed down a lot, meaning, I've learned to tame my mind and temper my expectations. Plainly, I just wasn't taking care of myself. I see that now. But I also know that's hard to do when you're grossly underpaid, constantly weighing needsversus wants. And that doesn't account for the emotional toil, carrying your students' burdens--poverty, genius, disability, abuse, etc. Many times, having a big heart seems to be the greatest obstacle of all...the enemy to a teacher's peace and prosperity. And yet we trudge on...because we are gardeners and stonecutters multiplying, shaping, and refining what we've been given: human lives.
I wrote this book because I want you to know I understand. I'm sure it's redundant in parts, or oversimplified in others, nevertheless, sometimes we need to be beaten across the head a few times before we get it. Kids can say some pretty profound things, and more often than not, are explained simply and directly. So? Trust that my heart was in a good place and let's move on, lol.In close, I really do hope you enjoy this. And if you do, know that a second book is on the way, For Bright Bored & Downright Disruptive Students: 52 Quotes for Under-challenged Visionaries. So after you've regained your footing in the treacherous school system, you may want to give a few of these away to your students ;)
From the Inside Flap:
Colleagues fail to do their part because they know you can and will carry them for the sake of the team. The head of your department counts on you year-after-year to deliver top-notch test scores. Don't lament the burden. Instead, appreciate the faith they've placed in you. They wouldn't call on you if you didn't possess something they did not have themselves. Your intelligence, patience and charisma shine best when times are dark; that's when you're needed most--in times of crisis. [57]
