This thorough study describes the extensive role played by Irish-Americans in the conflict in Northern Ireland. The author, a New Yorkbased freelance journalist born in Belfast, finds that Irish rebels have often turned to U.S. supporters for "the protesters, often the passion, and usually the material" for their guerrilla warfare. He offers an extensive view of the IRA's support network in the U.S., from helpful congressmen to a Brooklyn gunrunner. The "connection" is now changing, writes Holland, because many Irish-Americans are middle-class suburbanites whose attraction to Ireland is mainly nostalgic. As a result, rebels seeking haven, guns and money may soon have to turn elsewhere, he predicts. But, he adds, U.S. politicians will continue to play a role, as witness the Irish-Anglo Agreement of 1985, which marked the first official U.S. involvement in the troubles.
