From Booklist:
Gr. 1-3. This entertaining complement to the overabundance of primary Bible stories emphasizes the background of New Testament texts, events, and characters. The question-and-answer format is arranged to follow the general order of New Testament books. Most of the 39 questions touch on themes of genuine interest to young Christian readers--Jesus' "last name," friendships, behavior, humor; meanings of such terms as manger, frankincense, gospel; and the customs and trials of early Christians. Each answer, a concise paragraph of three to five sentences, is satisfyingly informative. The humorous, cartoonlike, crayon-clear illustrations that accompany each entry are pleasant, if undistinguished; however, watch for flora and fauna not indigenous to the Middle East. Scripture citations have not been included with entries. Therefore, although the text is accessible to an independent reader, a child may need the assistance of an adult with a good knowledge of the Scriptures to reconnect items of interest with corresponding Bible passages.
