Twentieth-centruy German paintings, acquired in the 1960s by the late Baron von Thyseen, form the core of the modern holdings of The Thyssen-Bornemisza Collection. They revolve around three main groups of artists - Die Brucke, which included Kirckner, Heckel, Schmidt-Rottluff and Pechstein, Der Blaue Reiter, led by Kandinsky and Franz Marc, and the Neue Sachlichkeit movement of Grosz and Dix. Beckmann, Feininger, Kokoschka, Nolde and Schiele are also significantly represented.

This catalogue provides an indispensible overview of the development of German art as a whole during the early years of the twentieth century.

A catalogue of 106 paintings by artists as diverse as James Ensor, George Grosz, Emil Nolde, Egon Schiele and Edvard Munch. With an introductory essay offering an overview of the exciting developments taking place in German art in the first half of the century.

From the Back Cover:
The twentieth-century German paintings, all of which have been acquired since the 1960s by the present Baron Thyssen, form the core of the remarkable modern holdings of the Thyssen-Bornemisza Collection. Works by such diverse artists as Klee, Beckmann, Meidner, Kirchner, Schmidt-Rottluff, Pechstein, Franz Marc, Grosz and Dix are augmented by examples of other artists working within the German tradition - Kandinsky, Munch, Ensor, Feininger, van Dongen and Jawlensky. The focus of this catalogue, the latest in the series embracing the whole of the Thyssen-Bornemisza Collection, is the exhaustive entries on individual works. Being in some cases extended essays in themselves, these entries bring to light much new information based on first-hand documentary and archival research, enabling the author to reassess many of the Collection's more problematic works. Each of the 118 subjects is reproduced in colour and the accompanying 125 comparative figures are illustrated in black and white. The authoritative introductory essay, together with a comprehensive notes section and bibliography, affords an overview of the exciting developments taking place in German art in the first half of this century, and place the Thyssen Collection's paintings in the context of such contemporary movements as Die Brucke and The Blue Rider, as well as later groups like Neue Sachlichkeit.
