Science, mythology, and conservation ethics are interwoven in this captivating and highly personal travelogue. It recounts how Jack Rudloe's lifelong fascination with sea turtles led him to journey to Central America and Malaysia to investigate the theory that magnetic forces help guide sea turtles in their migration, and to explore the Turtle Mother legend that shaped the attitudes of other, more primitive cultures. These ancient myths fostered a deep respect for sea turtles that helped to assure their sustainable harvest, in contrast with the ruinous practices of today.

About the Author:
Jack Rudloe is the founder of Gulf Specimen Marine Lab, a unique non-profit environmental education institute and marine biological supply that collects and ships all manner of sea creatures to aquariums and research centers nationwide. His articles have appeared in National Geographic, Audubon, Sports Illustrated, Reader's Digest and many other major magazines. He is the author of six highly acclaimed marine science books and one novel, Potluck.
Review:
A good storyteller, Rudloe scatters clues seductively throughout his tale. And he reveals them to us within the languid, insular and sometimes dangerous terrain of developing countries in the tropics. Lucid and earnest in his narrative, Rudloe evokes the spirit of Florida naturalist Archie Carr, with whom he once worked in Costa Rica. Clearly, Rudloe cares deeply about his subject, looking carefully for natural signs and when he finds them, reveling in their timeless message. In an age where writers put quick 'how-to, where-to'; books on the shelf just for the money or the status, this alone is a rarity. --Bill Belleville, Orlando Sentinel --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Turtle Mother also symbolizes a pursuit of spiritual truth-- enlightenment in both the Western and Eastern traditions, and that narrative is what makes the book's natural science and discovery coalesce. Fictional technique, beauty of language and understated mysticism place 'Turtle Mother' right up there with Peter Matthiessen s 'The Snow Leopard' Rudloe's exceptional capacity, though, is his sensibility, his compassion for every living creature including humans. --Barbara Hogan, Tallahassee Democrat --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.
