From School Library Journal:
Kindergarten-Grade 4-- With their rollicking rhythms and delight in language both real and invented, these seven poems and six limericks are as enjoyable, fresh, and vibrant now as they were when brand new. Included are "The Owl and the Pussycat" and "The Quangle Wangle's Hat" among others, as well as music for "The Pelican Chorus" and "The Yonghy-Bonghy-Bo." The illustrations are as luminous as the Dong's nose, utilizing watercolors and bright inks in a wax relief method familiar in batik-print cloth. Glorious thematic borders try to encase each long poem but rarely succeed since the illustrations within tend to burst the proscenium. While the pictures are sometimes reminiscent of Lear's own, the endpapers, an interpretation of two of Lear's fanciful botanical drawings, are the only redundancy. There's just enough in this volume so as not to overwhelm primary graders new to these works. Parents will relish reading these aloud as much as children will enjoy reading the poems to themselves. --Annette Curtis Klause, Montgomery County Department of Public Libraries, MD
