Lucinda Eliza Richards had longed for a great adventure and on August 17, 1911, at the age of 17, she embarked on a new chapter of her life. She would be the new schoolteacher at the White Star school on a ranch in the little Texas Panhandle town of Estelline. In letters to friends and family, Lucy shares the details of her new life as she experiences chauvinism, poverty, ignorance and racism, as well as generosity, respect and enthusiasm - all seemingly strangely compatible in the little community. She also has her first grown-up - and confusing - stirrings of love, and discovers that growing up is far more complicated than she had ever expected.

Review:
“I ran [this book] through three generations of readers—mother, wife, and child—and unanimously they read it with pleasure. . . . Lucy is a young lady you need to know.” --F. E. Abernethy (F. E. Abernethy)

“. . . the kind of bright and original work that evokes from some of us that soundest of compliments, ‘Wish I’d written that.’” --Texas Books in Review (Texas Books in Review)

“A truly fine tale of the indomitable human spirit, told in the honest voice of a strong young schoolmarm in early day West Texas.” --Larry L. King (Larry L. King)

“This is one of those books that is easy to get into, hard to get out of. Once started, it is nearly impossible to put down. Once put down, it is not easily forgotten.” --Fort Worth Star-Telegram (Fort Worth Star-Telegram)
