About the Author:
Michael Chinery (born London, 1938) has studied plant and animal life in many parts of the world, from Arctic tundra to African deserts and the rainforests, and has written many natural history books and contributed to numerous magazines and encyclopedias. He specializes in books for young people. A frequent broadcaster, he was a regular member of the BBC's Wildlife panel for many years.

Knowledge and respect Forest people live in small nomadic groups or in settled communities. Their traditions and customs ensure that they use the forest without harming it. Even hunters show respect and admiration for the animals they kill. The Ashwa people of Ecuador believe that every animal has some kind of spirit or magical power. For example, the anaconda represents stealth, and the jaguar represents bravery. Before hunting, the Ashwa ask these spirits to go with them and bring success.
