An introduction to the 4000-year history of ancient Egypt from predynastic times to the end of the Ptolemaic period (30BC). The work contains a new introduction since its first publication as "The Egyptian Kingdoms" in 1975. The opening chapter gives a summary of the history of ancient Egypt. Two chapters follow on the rediscovery of this almost forgotten civilization by the scholars among Napoleon's invasion forces, by later travellers and explorers and by the professional scholars and archaeologists of today. Later chapters examine the civilization of ancient Egypt in greater detail and explain such topics as how the pyramids were built and how a corpse was mummified. Four visual stories portray the evolution of the pyramid, Akhenaten's royal city of Tell el-Amarna, the form and function of a temple and the story of Howard Carter's discovery of the tomb of Tutankhamun in 1922.

Since the first edition of Ancient Egypt appeared in 1975, books on this popular subject have proliferated, but few of them cover the story of the Egyptian kingdoms in such a lively and informative manner. The opening chapter gives a lucid summary of the 4000-year history of ancient Egypt, from predynastic times: to the end of the Ptolemaic period (30 BC). Two chapters follow on the rediscovery of this almost forgotten civilization by the scholars among Napoleon's invasion forces, by later. travellers and explorers, and finally by, the professional scholars and archaeologists of today. Later chapters examine the civilization of ancient Egypt in greater depth and explain such fascinating topics as the conventions of representation in art, the role of the pharaoh in religion, how the pyramids were built and how a corpse was mummified to last for eternity. Four visual stories portray in words and pictures the evolution of the pyramid, Akhenaten's royal city of Tell el-Am rna, the form and function of a temple and the famous story of Howard Carter's ' discovery of the tomb of Tutankhamun in 1922. A new Introduction describing recent finds and the progress of research since first publication ensures that Ancient Egypt is completely up to date. The book is richly illustrated with photographs (most of them in colour), maps and diagrams. It is also equipped with a Chronological Table, a Bibliography, a fully illustrated Glossary and an Index.
