Grassland Animals - Softcover

PreSchool-Grade 5-- Handsome series entries that are great introductions to their ecosystems. Worldwide coverage in each volume means American children can marvel over the jerboa (Desert ) and springbok ( Grassland ) as well as more familiar creatures. While the focus is mainly mammals, other groups of the animal kingdom are included. Each of the 30-plus animals presented in each book have concise, catchy descriptions and are strikingly illustrated. Additional information is given in ``fact boxes'' and in small, charming cartoon bubbles emanating but not detracting from the beasts themselves. The colorful illustrations are lifelike and often depict the animals in motion. While there seems to be an explosion of books in eye-catching formats, these simple, attractive volumes will be enjoyed by children. Libraries well-stocked with such books as Alibert-Kouraguine's more difficult Prairie Dwellers (Silver-Burdett, 1984; o.p.) and Lerner's Desert Year (Morrow, 1991) will have to think long and hard before passing up these offerings, which are sure to be snatched up by youngsters who see them on display. --Amy Nunley, Toledo-Lucas County Public Library, OH
