From Mozart’s fabulous legato that “flowed like oil” to Beethoven’s oceanlike surge, from Clara Schumann’s touch “sharp as a pencil sketch” to Rubinstein’s volcanic and sensual playing, The Great Pianists brings to life the brilliant, stylish, and sometimes eccentric personalities, methods, and technical peculiarities of history’s greatest pianists.

Pulitzer Prize–winning critic and author Harold C. Schonberg presents vivid accounts of the artists’ performances, styles, and even their personal lives and quirky characteristics— such as Mozart’s intense competition with Clementi, Lizst’s magnetic effect on women (when he played, ladies flung their jewels on stage), and Gottschalk’s persistent nailbiting, which left the keys covered with blood.

Including profiles of Horowitz and Van Cliburn, among others, and chapters detailing the playing and careers of such modern pianists as de Larrocha, Ashkenazy, Gilels, Gould, Brendel, Bolet, Gutierrez, and Watts, The Great Pianists is a comprehensive and fascinating look at legendary performers past and present.

Front cover blurb: "By the music critic of the New York Times. 321 pianists, 107 illustrations". This copy is SIGNED in full & briefly INSCRIBED by Australian classical pianist Stephen McIntyre in blue ink on ffep: "For Dr. Thomson with thanks & good wishes. Stephen McIntyre, October '71". The University of Melbourne Conservatorium website notes: "Stephen McIntyre is known nationally and internationally as one of Australia's most eminent pianists. He is a sought-after concerto artist and chamber music player, and the chosen accompanist of many singers and instrumentalists. Born in Melbourne, Stephen McIntyre's teachers included Ada Freeman, Nadia Boulanger and Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli. From 1963 to 1975 he was based in Europe and gave concerts in the UK, France, Holland, Italy, Germany, Belgium, Japan and India. In 1975 he took up a foundation teaching post at the Victorian College of the Arts/ Faculty of VCA and MCM in Melbourne, where he continued as Head of the Piano department until 1994. Stephen McIntyre has performed as concerto soloist with all the major ABC orchestras, appeared in concert with Russian violinists Valery Klimov, Viktoria Mullova, Nelli Shkolnikova and toured extensively with violist Wolfram Christ and the renowned Dutch cellist Anner Bylsma. Stephen McIntyre was a founding member of Australian Chamber Soloists, Principal Artistic Advisor for Musica Viva during 1995/96, and was the Director of the chamber music program of the Melbourne Festival from 1989 to 1999." The recipient of McIntyre's inscription is Australian Ambassador Lloyd D. Thomson, this copy from his library. Diplomat Lloyd Thomson (1919-2015) was the first Australian Ambassador to the Holy See (Vatican) (1973-74, 1980-83), & resident outside Italy at other Australian diplomatic posts, including the Netherlands (The Hague), Ireland (Dublin), the UN in Switzerland (Geneva), plus Head of Mission with the Department of Foreign Affairs, along with other diplomatic posts.
