K-Gr 2-Aside from one pull-tab and one flap, the special effects that accompany this sprightly (and spritely) Halloween jingle all pop up as the page turns, making the book more durable, not to mention more suitable for sharing with groups of children, than, say Jan Pienkowski's classic hands-on Haunted House (Dutton, 1979). The four lines of verse per spread are just enough to read aloud while viewers can appreciate the cats, bats, green-skinned witches, grimacing ghosts, cartoonish ghouls, and other usual suspects that cavort energetically through a graveyard and a pumpkin field. At the end, they all gather around a rickety porch to "welcome" a trio of apprehensive trick-or-treaters. The text is even boxed in a light color-perfect for reading with the lights down low. Children will shiver in delighted terror.-John Peters, New York Public Library
