A Good Morning America "Read This" Book Club pick
Named One of the Best Books of the Year by the San Francisco Chronicle

A lyrical, moving story about the power and importance of memory, Someone Not Really Her Mother follows Hannah Pearl, a woman in her 70s whose memories of her youth in war-torn France and England have started to erase her present life in Connecticut.  Hannah's story is constructed in puzzle-like fashion, as her daughter and granddaughters illuminate her life as it has touched on their own.  This novel, composed in seven interlinked stories, is a beautiful tribute to the fact that our lives remain mysterious even as they find shape and value in others' hearts.

About the Author:
Harriet Scott Chessman is the author of three acclaimed novels, including Lydia Cassatt Reading the Morning Paper, a #1 Book Sense pick, Someone Not Really Her Mother (a Good Morning America Book Club Choice, and a San Francisco Chronicle Best Book), and Ohio Angels.  Her newest novel, The Beauty of Ordinary Things, is forthcoming in November 2013 with Atelier26 Books.  Having taught English for eleven years at Yale University, Harriet Chessman has also taught creative writing at Bread Loaf School of English and Stanford University's Continuing Studies Program.
From AudioFile:
Hannah Pearl lost her entire family in the Holocaust, escaped from France to England, married an RAF pilot, also killed in the war, and came to Connecticut to raise Miranda, their only daughter. Now in her 80s, with Alzheimer's advancing, the past, so long hidden from her family and herself, spills like vintage wine into her memories. By skillfully modulating her tone, Myra Platt frames Hannah's confused interior monologue within the world of her bewildered family. As they struggle to understand what is happening to their grandmother, she drifts deeper. Platt's gift for the perfect accent bridges Hannah's passage from the banal external world of Con-necticut--filled with nurses, drug store clerks, and granddaughters--to the rich but painful interior world of her French past and English husband.
