This fifth book in a projected six-book series deals with life in England shortly after D-Day. Allied troops may have finally secured a beachhead in France, but life was still filled with horror and hardship in London. Reserve Squad member Suzie Mountford and her boss (and lover) Tommy Livermore probe the bombing of a church. Hitler appears to have a new bomb, and the church is living proof of the devastating effects of Germany’s new V-1 rocket. But beyond the bombing itself, Mountford and Livermore find themselves involved in a murder investigation. Gardner nails the feeling of life in England during the turbulent 1940s when war ravaged the daily lives of European citizens. The story and characters, however, will seem very familiar, if not predictable, for anyone who has read much WWII fiction. Still, fans of the series will want to continue with it, and those who love reading about the era will be taken with the ambience alone. --Jeff Ayers
