Walsh plays with the pleasures and fantasies inspired by the words, ``What if?'' and allows ever more outlandish scenarios to culminate in a cautionary endingfor adults. It starts, of course, with a deliciously scary notion``What if when we got up Mum and Dad weren't there?''that tells readers that a necessary decommissioning of reality has taken place. The narrator proceeds to playful ideas, with the cat serving breakfast, and with breakfast being cat food. Events become spine-tingling when a dragon appears, and turn heroic when the dragon is subdued and tamed. Adults who find such speculation nonsense get fair warning when the narrator's words``I say you never know what's round the corner''underscore the picture of the dragon, in full flame, confronting authority figures. The ingenuous artwork features bright childlike forms, and is delightfully evocative despite an occasional tendency for the colors to merge and blur. Catchy and smart.
