Little Piglet
and Little Lamb
and Little Calf and Little Foal
want to venture out
of the farmyard
and take a walk
across the fields.
"Don't get lost!" say their mothers.

Little Piglet, Little Lamb,
Little Calf, and Little Foal
walk and walk and walk.
They play chase and hide-and-seek
and they race
and they splash—
what fun!

They won't get lost!
Or will they?

About the Author:

Pat Hutchins, one of seven children, was born in Yorkshire, England, and grew up in the surrounding countryside, which she still loves. At a very early age she knew that she wanted to be an artist and was encouraged by an elderly couple who would give her a chocolate bar for each picture she drew. A local art school offered her a scholarship and she studied there for three years, continuing her training at Leeds College of Art, where she specialized in illustration. Her career in the children's book field began with the highly acclaimed Rosie's Walk, a 1968 ALA Notable Book. Since then she has written five novels and created more than twenty-five picture books. She was awarded England's prestigious Kate Greenaway Medal in 1974 for The Wind Blew. Pat Hutchins lives with her husband in London, England.

From Booklist:
PreS-K. Hutchins' crisp, colorful art is particularly appealing in this endearing story about four young animals that set out after breakfast to play in the fields near their farmyard. Little Piglet, Little Lamb, Little Calf, and Little Foal chase one another around the apple tree, play hide-and-seek among bales of hay, and run races in a field of turnips. On their way back to the farm, they notice that the apples, the hay, and the turnips are gone. Are they lost? When they find their way back to the farmyard, they are welcomed by their moms, who offer freshly picked turnips, sweet hay, and delicious apples for dinner. Observant children will notice subtle activity, such as a pitchfork lifting a bale of hay onto a farm truck, taking place on the far left-hand side of each spread, and they'll enjoy being in the know when the animals are confused about the missing food. Some youngsters may not make the connection, but they will still relate to the playful young animals' games and subsequent worries. Lauren Peterson
