This excellent compilation of historical lore and practical information on the "useful plants" considered herbs ranges far and wide: by British writer Mabey's ( The Unofficial Countryside ) standards, white birch, aloe, asparagus and parsley all qualify. In separate chapters, readers learn how to cultivate herbs, cook and create other products (e.g., dyes) with them, and, above all, live a healthier life with their aid. Although the recipe for an anti-anemia decoction may require you to search far afield for ingredients, a well-stocked spice rack and this volume will quite readily yield sage toothpaste and chamomile hair rinse. And readers can safely rely on Mabey's extensive glossary. Though dubbed "new age," his beautifully illustrated guide to the time-honored powers of herbs should interest most gardeners, home chemists and nascent healers, not to mention cooks and purists of all persuasions.
